Marie Antoinette Triptych

GradEx 111

This project was split into three pieces of print media to form a complete triptych, based on the historical event of the Affair of the Diamond Necklace involving Marie Antoinette. The printed matter deals with her mistreatment by the press and pokes fun at the misrepresentation of historical political characters.

The first document is the libelle, filled with my own satirical exposé of Antoinette and real caricatures of her during her reign. I took inspiration from French libelles of the 1700s.

The next document is the illustration by Edouard Potvin. He inked a drawing of Antoinette in the style of the hurtful caricatures drawn of the queen.

The last document is the letter, a forged love letter made to look like Marie Antoinette’s own writing. I studied some surviving letters with her handwriting and wrote a raunchy letter to her supposed lover, Rohan.

Overall, I am conveying the powerful misrepresentation of historical events that print media can convey. The three entirely fake artifacts are displayed as proper and truthful pieces of media, complete with museum tags, pushing the viewer to question what is real and what is fake.
