Down and Out in Paris and London
This experimental data visualization object boasts 312 buttons. Each button on this dress represents 1oo female victims of police-reported sexual assault in Canada in 2022.

I decided to represent this piece of data through clothing because oftentimes, when women are sexually assaulted, the conversation of what they were wearing frustratingly comes up. The red button is a nod to a woman whose sexual abusers were acquitted because she was wearing red underwear.

I also decided to hand-sew each button to ensure that I spend as much time with the piece as possible. It is the unfortunate truth that as a woman in Toronto, I think about the possibility of being assaulted every time I leave my home. With this in mind, I thought it fitting that I spend an uncomfortable amount of time with this project to mirror the time spent thinking of this subject.
